Hundreds of Ants Grouped up on my driveway?

can depend on the species , but they could be swarming, sending queens a drones off to mate..breeding, some ant reproduce their multiple queened colonies at the nest site rather than flying in the air... or some species are like nomads not in a nesting site for long and will pick up everything and move to another location for a day or two.
