Black Termites.......?

It is possible they were termites, but more likely carpenter ants. If they were termites they would not be all that large and everyone would have wings, carpenter ants do not have wings. That is one sure way for you to tell what they are. Either way way you need to call an exterminator, an infestation this large is nothing to mess with.
